Dragon’s Den – Shoot it Yourself

Posted on: October 2nd, 2011 by kathryn No Comments

One of my favourite TV programmes is Dragons Den and when I sat down this week to watch it, I didn’t expect it to be the inspiration for my blog this week but as soon as I saw the pitch from the girls from Shoot it Yourself, I thought that I just had to write about them.

For those of you that didn’t watch the programme, Shoot it Yourself provide an alternative to the traditional wedding videographer. They hire out video cameras which your guests can use in the run-up to your wedding and on the wedding day. They then take the footage, pick out the best bits and use their talent to turn it into a wedding video masterpiece.
Prices start from £749 which provides a cheaper alternative to a videographer. It is also a different look and feel to the standard wedding videos. It’s fast paced, cut to the music with lots of personal messages, funny asides and in jokes from your friends and family.

If you want to find out further information, take a look at their website (which I love!) and see what you think.

And, yes, they did get the investment they want from Hilary Devey!

Bride on her wedding day

Setting the date

Posted on: September 25th, 2011 by kathryn No Comments

One of the first decisions most brides make when they get engaged is what time of year they want to get married. Here are a few things to think about when making this decision:

Spring

- Trees will be covered with green leaves and colourful blossom to give beautiful backgrounds to your outside photos. Bear this in mind if you are looking at possible venues at a different time of year as the grounds may look a lot more colourful in Spring.
- April showers! Although you can never guarantee the weather in England, you are more likely to get caught in a downpour.
- If you want to get married in a Church, many churches have rules around decorating the church during Lent so make sure you understand what you can and can’t do during this time.
- Colourful flowers that smell delightful are in abundance, for example sweet peas.
- The food in season at this time of year conjures up images of freshness. Tasty, succulent lamb and minted new potatoes, yummy!

Summer

- If you are thinking about having your reception in a marquee or having a barbeque, this is the time of year to do it. Although you should always consider a back-up plan if the weather doesn’t turn out as planned (see an upcoming article on this on my blog).
- Pimms! Nothing says a summer wedding better than having pimms with lots of fresh fruit at the drinks reception.
- Most people go on holiday over the Summer so some of your guests may not be around. You might want to send out save the date cards in advance of the invitations before your guests book their holidays.
- Sporting tournaments. Not something brides often think about but it’s often very important for the groom and the guests. Think about whether there are any large sporting tournaments happening when you are thinking about having your wedding. You wouldn’t want to have it on the same day England got to the World Cup Final as this might upstage your reception!
- It is the busiest time of year for weddings so make sure you start planning 12-18 months in advance to ensure you get the venue and suppliers that you really want.
- Although, this summer hasn’t been a scorcher, there is always the potential for a very hot day so bear this in mind when choosing food. Try not to go for something too heavy. Also if you are having a buffet, think about how long the food can sit out in the heat.

Autumn

- The sun is less strong at this time of year so if you do have a sunny day, the glare will be less for your photos.
- The change in the trees and flowers brings about gorgeous, warm, autumnal colours that can provide a beautiful colour scheme for your wedding.
- Fireworks! Although couples choose fireworks for weddings held throughout the year, the dark nights in Autumn will show them off to best effect.

Winter

- A lot of venues will put up Christmas decorations so this could reduce your costs to decorate the venue.
- Your dress. It will be cold so you will need to think about what style of dress you want to ensure you don’t have chattering teeth and are blue in your photos!
- Choosing a venue with big log fires will keep you and your guests warm during your reception. Also, think about serving your guests mulled wine to warm them up as well.
- This time of year is also great for long-haul honeymoon destinations as the weather in these locations is best at this time of year.
- January and February (with the exception of Valentine’s Day) are quiet months for weddings so you will be able to get your pick of the suppliers and should be able to get a good deal.

I hope you have found this useful to give you a few pointers when choosing your wedding date. I think the key for a gorgeous wedding is making the most of the time of year you getting married and reflecting this in the décor, the flowers and the food. As well as this creating a beautiful day, choosing products which are naturally abundant at the time of year you are getting married will help to keep the costs down.

Did you know the phrase “tying the knot” initially came from an ancient Babylonian custom in which threads from the clothes of both the bride and groom were tied in a knot to symbolise the couple’s union?

Did you know the bride stands to the groom’s left during a Christian ceremony because in bygone days the groom needed his right hand free to fight off suitors?

All things bright and beautiful

Posted on: May 2nd, 2011 by kathryn No Comments

May has always been my favourite month of the year. I think this is mostly driven by the fact that it’s the month I was born and the weather seems to be consistently nice and it hasn’t disappointed this weekend. This is an extra special May as it is my 30th this year and I am treating myself to afternoon tea at The Langham (but more of that later in the month)!
Back when I was still at primary school, there was a tradition that on your birthday, you were allowed to choose the hymn that was sung in the school assembly and I always chose “All things bright and beautiful” so this has provided the inspiration for this month’s design board.

Although the Royal Wedding had a very understated colour scheme (which I am sure will inspire may weddings in the future), here are some more colourful ideas.

There is no rule to say that all your bridesmaids have to have matching dresses (think Carrie Bradshaw’s almost wedding). There is also no rule to say that you have to stick it one or two colours for your theme – why not use the whole rainbow!
